Gravity Racer June 2024

After applying in Spring of 2024 my team was selected for the London Red Bull Soapbox hosted at Alexandra Palace. The main challenge of this project was not the technical aspects of the design but rather the extreme time constraints pressed upon us as a team, with just two weeks to design and build the car we managed to make it a reality.

I chose to design a welded steel spaceframe chassis for the car with a parallel linkage Ackerman steering linkage. As a team we opted to ultimately drop suspension from our final design, it was determined that the maximum load on the BMX wheels was below what would make them buckle under race conditions. This and the fact that it enabled us to save money and time for other aspects of the car made it an easy choice. The car was first designed using the Autodesk suite before parts were measured up and manufactured by hand.

Something we were particularly proud of was our sourcing of recycled materials with over 60% of the car being constructed from recycled materials.

As a team we were fortunate enough to be sponsored by UKNEST who kindly supported our project.

N.B. The Grugatti happily made it down the track before being driven 8 miles back to Imperial!
